A Day at Lake Calima: A Family Reunion and Traditional Flavors

The best part of it all was when we decided to stop and try some local dishes from the region. First, we stopped by a small stall selling "fish empanadas", a delicious dish that’s very representative of Lake Calima, since the lake is famous for its fishing. Served with "ají" (spicy sauce), these empanadas were a real treat for the taste buds. We also tried "arepas de maíz" (corn arepas) filled with cheese, a classic that is never missing from any family gathering. And of course, we couldn’t skip the "panela with lime" drink, which was perfectly refreshing on that hot day.

That same afternoon, at my uncles' house, we were celebrating the birthday of one of our family members, which made the visit even more special. The house, surrounded by gardens full of flowers and plants, was filled with laughter and conversation. As soon as I walked in, the smell of freshly baked cake made me feel right at home. Sharing that moment with my family, surrounded by hugs and good wishes, is what made this trip so memorable."

The cake, fluffy and sweet, was a perfect blend of flavors that melted in my mouth. While we ate, we continued chatting about family stories, past memories, and future plans. And although the food was excellent, what made it truly special was the warmth and connection between us—the feeling of belonging that can only be found when you’re surrounded by loved ones.

What impacted me most about this trip was the opportunity to not only experience the natural beauty of Lake Calima and its surroundings but also to immerse myself in the culture of the area: its neighborhoods, traditions, and of course, its flavors. Those little details, like the kindness of the people, the simple customs, and the homemade d1ishes, left a lasting impression on me.

This trip allowed me to get to know not just my family better, but also a region that has so much to offer, both in terms of its people 1.1and its traditions. Lake Calima and its surroundings have certainly become a special place for me, a place where family connection and the enjoyment of local cuisine make every visit an unforgettable experience.
